Hot melt – what’s our interest?

Hot melt adhesives are thermoplastic compounds that are solid at room temperature and become fluid at high temperatures. The application of heat melts them to put them in contact with the material to be joined, providing a suitable degree of humidity between the adhesive and the adherent, an indispensable condition for proper adhesion.

Despite the economic crisis, the market for hot melt type industrial adhesives is in constant growth due to its advantages compared to other types of industrial adhesives.

The main properties of hot melt adhesives are:

  • Absence of solvents in their composition.
  • Instant adhesion and immediate handling.
  • Simple application equipment.
  • Easy automation.
  • Absence of drying tunnels and no need for daily cleaning.
  • Good adhesion on both porous and non-porous surfaces.
  • High performance and productivity.
  • Flexibility at low temperature (wide range of service temperatures).
  • Very low energy consumption.
  • Reduced packaging and transport costs.
  • Good stability during storage.
  • Good resistance to solvents.

Another notable property of hot melt adhesives is their composition, which consists mainly of the following three components:

  • Polymer: which acts as the skeleton, providing the joint with cohesive integrity.
  • Resin: provides the hot melt adhesive with tack or stickiness
  • Wax: acts as the solvent medium for the resin and polymer, reducing viscosity and increasing the softening temperature.

In the Forest Chemical Group we produce a biodegradable hot melt adhesive that respects the environment, this being one of the main principles of our company.

We have a highly specialised R&D department with a laboratory with the latest technical advances. We carry out the necessary studies for offering each client an optimal adhesion solution according to the substrates to be adhered, always seeking innovation and the improvement of our clients’ production processes. We also have a quality control department that carries out daily checks on the main properties of our products according to the UNE-EN-ISO 9001:2008, UNE-EN-ISO 14001:2004 and UNE 166002:2006 standards.
